The Best Locker - Carrington: Recent activity
SDesign a new school locker
Hi Carrington. First, you did a nice job with your sketchup model. Your design ideas are clearly depicted. I do like the idea of using cork on the inside of your locker, and as lmweaver has suggested, it can be a more durable type of cork material to ensure it lasts. A nice thing about using cork too is that you could use it as a tackable surface.
I like how you've organized the space into compartments to be used in different ways. You've provided space at the top for what looks like a laptop computer and speakers (?). That is an interesting idea. Do you bring a laptop to school? It suggests that you could use your locker space as a sort of temporary workstation? You've introduced an entirely different function for a school locker, which I like, because it shows you are thinking out of the box. As well I like the idea of providing drawers to put away smaller things like pens and such. The trash bin at the bottom is a nice touch!
The space at the top of your locker looks to be for book storage. If so, then it may be too small...you may want to make this compartment bigger.
All in all, nicely done, Carrington!

Hi Carrington, how's the design process going? If you have any questions about design and materials, or how best to convey your design ideas graphically, please feel free to ask me. I check every day.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Carrington,
Please make a few quick sketches that show how you are taking into consideration your mentor's comments. Cork is used for floors but there is a finish they put on it to make it last, look it up. Please post your sketch up model even if it is not done, it's about the process!!!!!

Carrington. Your online mentor is doing all the talking here! We want to hear from you! It would be very helpful if you could respond and comment here. Tell us more about what you are thinking so we can better understand your design and ideas.

Also, it's hard to understand what you're showing us in the interesting sketch under "Brainstorm" because it's hard to see all of your drawing.
...
For best results, all your images should be horizontal and have a maximum size of 580px by 326 px. The imageviewer will automatically shrink them to fit if they are larger, but if it's a vertical image to start with, it will cut it off, as it has done with yours. Can you please rescan the image to be a horizontal image, remove the existing image, and upload a new one? Thanks!

Hi Carrington. I see that you've added some more information and answered more questions about your locker, which is great. The next step was to analyze this information and start sketching out some ideas for what your new locker design could be. For example, you wrote "I would like my locker to have a more attractive look and a color that coresponds with the school’s colors. That way, I would have more school pride and feel comfortable at school, and feel welcomed." Based on this desire, sketch out some ideas for how you would incorporate, or show, your school colors on your new locker.
The more sketches you can produce to show how you are thinking about the design, the better. Sketching, or drawing, is how designers communicate their thoughts. They don't need to be perfect or precise because their intention is to communicate rough or preliminary ideas. The two sketches you posted are a good start, but if you have more, feel free to show them to me.
Cork as a material for your locker is an interesting choice. I like how you want to use cork because its properties (soft and warm) are the opposite of steel's (hard and cold). A practical consideration for any material that you select would be durabillity, however. So make sure that cork will stand the constant wear and tear that lockers are subjected to day in and day out, year after year.

Collecting information is a crucial first step in the design process. I encourage you to go over that section again and answer the questions in there as they relate to your design problem. There is also an insightful article about the state of lockers in today's school that is worth a read.
Here are some more questions you could ask yourself or your classmates as you begin designing a new locker:
1. Is your locker located conveniently, and does it hold all the things you need it to hold during the day, as you go from class to class? How do you feel about the size of your locker? Is it too small? Too big? Just right?
2. Do you like how your locker looks?
3. Do you look forward to visiting your locker at various times in the day? Do you consider it your own personal space, an extenstion of yourself, as opposed to just a box that stores your jacket, shoes and books?
4. What are some things, if any, you would like your locker to have?
Have you taken measurements of your current locker? What is its width, height, and depth?
The sketch in the Brainstorm/Analyze seems to be cut off. Is this a design idea? Could you describe it to me?
This is a fun design project. Keep me posted on your progress, and feel free to ask me questions. I'm here to help guide you through this design process.
