Usually the most fun design problems are the most challenging, and usually involve working within an existing floor plan! Creating these "bubble diagrams" are a good jumping off point to get you to reconsider spaces...

I like that you looked at the library within the context of the entire building. This will inform your final solution that much better. This type of study also allows you to consider sun exposure from a heat gain/loss perspective.

Putting pen to paper is very important, even if it's just for taking field dimensions.

Nice section and good ideas. Have you looked at the addition to the Regenstein Library at the University of Chicago? It was designed by Helmut Jahn of Chicago and most of it is underground. The portion above ground is roofed in glass and is a reading room. It is awesome! You may want to look at it for inspiration.

This comment is for all your research. Very nice job! Research is key in architecture. I like that you took the time to talk to the librarians. You've also done your architectural history research. WPA murals and awesome lighting are going to give you an amazing palate to work with!
