Architecture + Engineering: Design A Sustainable Tiny Home


A tiny home is a home that is no larger than 350 sq feet. The challenge of a tiny home is storage and cleanliness; however, this issue can be solved with innovative and creative solutions. Not only that, but a tiny home shouldn’t feel cramped it should feel like any other home. Because it is! With that In mind I thought of places to include mirrors I also used a lot of the same materials for cabinets and left open space in the middle of the rooms to give the illusion of a bigger home.

Collect Info

In any given situation the more information you have the better. I asked myself who is the client and what is the purpose of the space? In this case, the client is a small 2 person family with the occasional guest who has the option of a pullout couch that turns into a bed along with eco-friendly resources to leave the smallest footprint. For example, ‘My Little Greenhouse’ uses renewable diesel for fuel, solar panels foe electricity, bamboo flooring, rainwater barrels, and a community greenhouse garden.

Brainstorm Ideas

Brainstorming is where I really began putting my ideas on paper and began figuring out the functionality of everything as well as the aesthetics of everything.

Develop Solutions

For this step I made of list of all the necessary items and rooms in my tiny home and began figuring out what would be the most functional, appealing, and most importantly, tiny.

Final Design

For this step I put together all of my work and took into consideration the feedback In received from my parents. Below includes my SketchUp exterior design and my floor plans for both floors.
