Denver Hayden's Chicago Library

2017 National DiscoverDesign Competition: Library + Community Space Design

I am designing a library, hopefully it will be for young adult and adults with a small children's portion

Collect Info

When making this library I need to make sure that it is appealing to the outside eye. My library needs to have lots of windows and curtain walls for natural lighting during the day for reading. When thinking structurally I need lots of detail on the top of the roof, not just for detail for structure and formation too.

Brainstorm Ideas

From looking at the site plan, I'm going with a more modern aesthetic look. Enjoy!

Develop Solutions

These are my Elevations and section cutouts. Enjoy!

Final Design

So I thought that this style of building would be fit for the site plan of Little Italy. With the tall walls extending I figured it would catch the communities eyes and draw people in. I decided to go with the slanted roof that opens up to W Taylor Street so that it's seen and the people in the library can look upon the city. I wanted a lot of curtain walls to open up the library and let in plenty of natural light for reading lovers.

Nice use of glass on front and side facade. Front entry could be more prominent from sidewalk. Would like to see in context of neighborhood. Similar arcade entry to other students in class. The cylindrical space: I can see kids loving to play in there. I would have liked to see the building in context with the lot. That would have been helpful to understand how it fit into the community -AR

I really liked the corner where they anchored it. It’s very accessible. And I really like the exterior red. -SS
