2017 National DiscoverDesign Competition: Library + Community Space Design

Library project This library is meant to be architecturally built to blend with its surroundings and be very useful to the locals and newcomers. This building is meant to blend with the history of the location and the buildings in its surroundings.

Collect Info

Information summary The location of the library is in the perfect location if it is built right. It gets the perfect amount of traffic from locals and tourists and it is a fair distance away from the college to get some college students.

Brainstorm Ideas

My ideas that I first came up with did change a little over time for a better result, but for the most part it all mostly stayed the same

Develop Solutions

My design of the Chicago Public Library is meant to flow together naturally. at the heart of the library is the lobby which is most of the first floor. in the lobby there is a cafe as well as chairs and tables so you can relax and have a cup of coffee or read a book. the first, second, and third floor flow together easily. The third floor is the children area and the second floor is the adult area.

Final Design

My Chicago Public Library is designed to look attractive and at the same time look sleek and fun. my goal for this library was to make it feel safe the second you step inside. I made my design fun and colorful mixed with the slightly modern look of glass and a darker wood. This Library is intended to allow children, teenagers, and adults to read a book, do an essay, or even just relax in the cafe. the interior all flows together to allow everyone to find their way around the entire building and enjoy all the little details and fun features. The materials that have been used in this design are meant to look attractive and at the same time look slightly modern look. at first glance the main materials that you see is the red on the third floor being the children area. Then you have the wood overhanging the south west corner, this was done to add character to the building and to tone down the red just enough. Finally there is a lot of glass used in my design to give the interior natural light and to add more character.

I like the use of words on front facade, provides an interesting texture and dynamic to building. Two-story space is nicely designed. Color palette makes it look a bit like a firehouse. Would like to see in within the neighborhood context. Similar arcade entry to other students in class. -AR

I really liked the use of color. If she was walking down the street she would really be drawn in by the use of color. -SS

I was unsure about the graphics on the outside at first, but after seeing the interior thought that was a really creative idea. -AR
